ROLEcamp

What’s it all about?

Outcomes . The change created by an  intervention.

Services and service commissioners are measuring the effectiveness of their services by looking at outcomes. We, the ROLE network, believe those outcomes should be selected by service users/survivors and carers. "No decision about me without me."

This event asks what outcomes do we want? And how will we know if services have provided those outcomes?

Who should attend?

This event is for people in the North West of England who have a personal lived experience and involvement in mental health. You might call yourself a:

  • service user
  • survivor
  • patient
  • client
  • carer

It doesn’t matter what sort of service you may have received (or refused). It might be from the NHS or from a charity.

We want people with experience of all kinds of services including people who have been detained under the Mental Health Act, or used counselling services. We welcome people who experience multiple discrimination – people who in addition to mental health challenges, face challenges because of race, gender, sexuality, age, faith or disability.

Who shouldn’t attend?

If you work in mental health services, this event isn’t really for you, UNLESS you are open about using services and are willing to put your professional status to one side while at our event. For this event, we’re interested in experience of receiving services, not the views of providers of services. But please do come along if you want to talk about what it is like as a worker who needs to use services.

We know that will exclude people who work in services, but don’t want to admit to using those services. We’re sorry. We're hoping to enable people to contribute online so that may be an option for you.

If you work in mental health and want to learn about service user views, this event isn’t for you either. If you would like to receive the report of the event, get in touch.

What about support workers?

Ideally we’d like the conference to be completely made up of service users/survivors and carers, but we know that some people need support to travel and participate. We hope that our event will be supportive and that people will feel comfortable here. We ask workers to encourage service users/survivors and carers to support each other to attend. But if a service user asks a support worker to attend with them, just let us know so that we can make sure you both get a place.

Who’s organising it?

The ROLE network is a group of service users/survivors and carers from across the north west.  See our website at role.org.uk

Who’s funding it?

Open Up, part of time to change, are funding our project as one of their Open Up initiatives. Lyn Newman, one of the coordinators from Open Up will be there on the day. Several organizations across the north west are also contributing in all sorts of ways such as providing photocopying or items for goodie bags. If you’d like to offer sponsorship – do get in touch.

How much does it cost?

Our event is free to attend - that's right, no entrance fee.

We will provide refreshments including lunch, but we cannot cover transport costs. We are asking organisations including service user groups, NHS Trusts and LINks to pay travel expenses for service user and carer representatives to attend. Please get in touch with your local organisations.
